CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)

Hello, everybody. We'd like to begin by thanking you for buying the December 2005 issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity born in the month of December, we've chosen an idol in the contemporary sports world, golf sensation Tiger Woods. Eldrick Woods, Tiger's real name, was born in California on December 30th, 1975. He was nicknamed Tiger by his father in honor of a close Vietnamese friend. Tiger showed a clear interest in golf practically from the time he could walk. As a young boy, his phenomenal skills in the game quickly grabbed notice, as illustrated by his being featured in Golf Digest magazine at the age of 5. Through his teens, he played and won countless amateur events. But more on Tiger later. Time now to move on to this month's lesson.

OK, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Before we say goodbye, let's continue with the story of Tiger Woods. After winning dozens of awards as an amateur, Tiger played his first tournament as a pro in 1996, at the age of 20. Victory followed victory, and by 1997, at the age of just 21, he rose to the peak of the golf profession by achieving the No. 1 position in the Official World Golf Rankings. The PGA Tour chose Tiger as its Player of the Year in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. 2004 was a difficult year for him, but in March 2005 Tiger reclaimed his No. 1 ranking. In addition to being a stellar golfer, through his own Tiger Woods Foundation, Tiger is also deeply involved in charity work. Today he serves as an inspiration for young children worldwide. Well, that's about all we have time for. We'll see you again next month.

Hello, everybody. We wish to thank you for buying the November 2005 issue of CNN English Express. Before getting into this month's lesson, as always, we'd like to introduce a celebrity who was born this month. For November, we've chosen one of today's most popular and admired actresses: Meg Ryan. Meg was born on November 19th in 1961. Her full name at birth was Margaret Mary Emily Ann Hyra, and she was born in the city of Fairfield in Connecticut. She began acting while she was a student at New York University, where she was majoring in journalism. Her film debut, using the stage name Meg Ryan, came in 1981, when she was featured in the movie Rich and Famous. More about Meg and her film career later. First, it's time now to get started on this month's lesson.

Well, that'll just about do it for this month's lesson. Before we go, though, we'd like to return to our story about Meg Ryan. Meg's first major success in Hollywood came in 1986, when she was in the blockbuster film Top Gun, which lifted her to Tinseltown stardom. Her next big success at the box office was with the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally. For her performance in that film, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. She was nominated for a second time in 1994, for her performance in the highly popular Sleepless in Seattle. A third nomination came in 1999 for You've Got Mail. Unfortunately, on all three occasions she failed to win the award. But that hasn't kept her from winning the hearts of fans worldwide. Today she remains one of the most sought-after actresses on the planet. Well, that's about it this time around. We'll see you again next time.

CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)

Hi, everybody. To begin, we thank you for purchasing the October 2005 issue of CNN English Express. Before we start our lesson, first we'd like to introduce our celebrity of the month. This month we've chosen Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was born on October 26th, 1947. From an early age, Hillary was an outstanding student. She attended Wellesley College and then Yale Law School, which is where she met Bill Clinton. They were married in 1975. Hillary's legal career blossomed just as her husband's political star began rising. He became governor of Arkansas in 1978, and Hillary served as first lady of that state for 12 years. Shortly thereafter, she became first lady of the entire country when Bill became president in January 1993. More on Hillary later. Right now, it's time to move ahead into this month's lesson.

Well, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Before we say goodbye, here's a bit more about Hillary Rodham Clinton. As First Lady, Hillary quickly attained nationwide and worldwide fame. With her sharp mind and skill as a public speaker, she was an ideal partner to the president. But Hillary proved to be much more than just a supporting wife. Besides her legal expertise and political savvy, she also proved herself an outstanding writer. In 1996, her book, It Takes a Village, became an instant bestseller. In 2000, as Bill's presidency was drawing to a close, Hillary ran for and won the office of senator of the state of New York, a position she still holds today. And many people believe she will run for the office of president herself in 2008 or 2012. Time will tell. Well, that's all we have time for. We'll see you again next time.

CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)

Hello, everyone. We begin by thanking you for purchasing the September 2005 issue of CNN English Express. Our celebrity born in the month of September is Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the legendary rock band Queen. Freddie Mercury was born on September 5th, 1946, in Africa, in Zanzibar. His parents were Persian, and Freddie is actually a nickname he adopted during his student days at a British school: his real name was Farrokh Bulsara. In 1964, Freddie and his family left Zanzibar and migrated to England, where he enrolled in an art college. It was there that he took an avid interest in rock music and met Roger Taylor and Brian May. They eventually formed a band together, Queen, with Freddie as lead singer. To match his flamboyant stage persona, Freddie adopted the surname Mercury. More on Freddie later. Now, it's time to get started on this month's lesson.

CDエンディング・ナレーション(track 99)

Well, that's about it for this month's lesson. Before we go, let's continue our story about Freddie Mercury. Queen made its record debut in 1973. It didn't take very long before the band was making the hit charts with its mixture of pure rock, great melodies and symphonic power. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Are The Champions" are among their biggest hits, today considered classics of rock music. With Freddie its foremost attraction, Queen continued to thrill audiences and record buyers well into the 1980s. Good fortune took a turn for the worse toward the end of the decade, however, when Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS. He kept his ailment a secret and continued to sing as long as he could, until the disease finally began to take its toll. Freddie Mercury died on November 24th, 1991, at the age of 45. His name, and Queen's place in the history of rock music, live on in the hearts of fans worldwide. Well, we're about out of time. We'll see you again next month.

Hi, everybody. To begin, we'd like to thank you for buying the August 2005 issue of CNN English Express. Among the many celebrities who were born in the month of August, today we'll talk a bit about a Hollywood actor who is phenomenally popular practically everywhere, and that definitely includes Japan. We're talking about the very handsome Richard Gere, who was born on August 31st, 1949. Richard Gere was born in Philadelphia. During his college years, he left school in order to pursue a career in acting. His film career got off to a fair start in 1975, but truly took off after he appeared in the much acclaimed movie American Gigolo in 1980. We'll continue the story of Richard Gere later. Right now, it's time to begin this month's lesson.

OK, that's our lesson for this month. Now, we'd like to return briefly to our story about our celebrity of the month, Richard Gere. Shortly after American Gigolo, Gere had an even bigger hit with the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman. His career was well established by that time, but then in 1990 he rose a notch even higher with his appearance in the blockbuster hit Pretty Woman, co-starring against Julia Roberts. Since then, he's continued to be an amazingly busy man, balancing his acting career with his deep involvement in Buddhism and support of the Dalai Lama. Recently, he made a visit to Japan to promote the Hollywood version of Shall We Dance? During that visit, he even danced briefly with Prime Minister Koizumi. You may have seen it in the news reports. Well, that's about all we have time for. See you again next month. Bye for now.

Hello, everyone. We begin by thanking you for buying the July 2005 issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity born in July, we have chosen to put the spotlight on Arnold Schwarzenegger, an actor-turned-politician known to virtually everybody. Arnold was born on July 30, 1947, so this year he celebrates his 58th birthday. He was born in Austria, in a tiny hamlet near Graz. Early in his teens, he began serious bodybuilding, and at age 19, he won the title of Mr. Europe. That was followed one year later, in 1967, by his winning of the Mr. Universe contest, just one of many bodybuilding titles he went on to win. In 1968, he emigrated to the U.S., where his life has taken a number of amazing turns. But more on Arnold later. Right now, we'd better get started on this month's lesson.

Well, that'll about do it for this month's lesson. Before we go, here's some more about Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shortly after he arrived in the U.S., Arnold began a career as an actor. After a slow start, he acquired superstar status in the early 1980s after starring in the Hollywood blockbuster Terminator. From there, Arnold's star continued to ascend ever higher, capped perhaps by the acquisition of his own star, literally, on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame," in 1987. More recently, as you all know, Arnold has turned his skills to the political world. In 2003, he was elected governor of the state of California. And now there is talk that Arnold may run someday for U.S. president. An amazing career for a boy born in a tiny village in rural Austria. Well, I'm afraid we're out of time. We'll see you again next month. Bye for now.

For our celebrity of the month, this month we celebrate the birthday of a truly royal celeb, Prince William. On June 21st Prince William turns 23, as he was born in 1982. As you probably know, he is the elder of two sons born to Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Diana. His full name is William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor. Today he is in the spotlight not just as the second in line to the British throne, but also as one of the world's most eligible and attractive bachelors. But more about the Prince later. First, it's time to get started with this month's lesson.

The Prince got his secondary education at the famed Eton College, where he proved to be an excellent student. Upon graduation, he took a so-called "gap year" off to travel, during which time he spent 10 weeks doing community work in Chile. Presently he is enrolled at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. As the future king of England and heir to the good looks of his mother, the tragic Princess Diana, Prince William is destined to remain in the global spotlight for many years to come. Well, that's all we have time for this time around. See you again, next month.

Hello, everyone. We'd like to thank you for buying the May 2005 issue of CNN English Express. Our featured celebrity born in the month of May is Clint Eastwood, who just recently won an Academy Award for direction of the Academy's choice for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Million Dollar Baby. Clint was born on May 31st, 1930, which means this year he turns 75, although he looks remarkably young for a man his age. In his twenties, he began acting minor roles in minor films. He became a household name in the United States when he starred in the wildly popular TV series Rawhide, which began in 1959. More about Clint later, though. First, we'd better move ahead with this month's lesson.

Well, that'll do it for this month's lesson. Before we go, let's get back to our story about Clint Eastwood. After his role in Rawhide, Clint went on during the 1960s to become a major box-office attraction worldwide in a string of popular Westerns such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. During the 1970s he became even more famous for his role in the now legendary Dirty Harry series. In more recent years, he has expanded his talents in several ways. During the mid-1980s, for a number of years he served in public office as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, in California. But more importantly, Clint Eastwood gradually honed his skills as a film director, leading to two Oscar wins in that category: first for his 1992 film Unforgiven, and now for Million Dollar Baby. Well, that'll have to be it for this time. We'll see you again next month.

She was born in western Siberia and began playing tennis when she was just 4. When she was 6, her unusual talent for tennis was spotted by tennis legend Martina Navratilova. To enable Maria to develop her talent further, she emigrated from Russia to the United States, to Florida, where she began taking special lessons. But more about Miss Sharapova later. Right now, it's time for this month's lesson.

Well, that's all for our lesson for April. Now let's talk a little bit more about this month's celebrity, Maria Sharapova. After she arrived in the United States, Maria set about the dual tasks of improving her tennis and adapting to life in America. Naturally, when she arrived she spoke only Russian; but being young and adaptable, it apparently wasn't long before she was making herself totally at home in her new country. It didn't take long either for people in the tennis world to take notice of this young and attractive blond girl with phenomenal skill on the tennis court. Maria turned pro at the tender age of 14 and made history by defeating Serena Williams to win at Wimbledon in 2004. And her star has only begun its rise. Celine was born near Montreal, Canada, on March 30th, 1968. Amazingly, she is the last of 14 siblings. She began performing musically with her family from the age of 5, and at age 12 she wrote a song in her native French language that caught the attention of Rene Angelil, a producer. Rene was so impressed that he immediately decided to devote himself to promoting Celine's singing career. And the career that Celine has forged has been impressive indeed. More about that later. For now, let's get to this month's lesson.

Well, that's the end of our lesson for March. Before we sign off, here's a bit more about Celine Dion. You may not know this, but one of the major milestones in Celine's early career was her winning of a major award in Tokyo, at the Yamaha World Song Festival in 1982. Subsequently, she began having hit records in Europe, still all in her native language. It wasn't until 1990 that she released her first album in English, after studying intensively at a well-known language school. The album led to a hit single, and from there her international career began climbing to ever more impressive heights. She and Rene married in 1994. Today, Celine Dion is known worldwide as one of the greatest pop divas of our times. Well, our time's just about up. We'll see you all again next month.

In 1927, he hit 60 home runs, a record that stood until 1961. In 1934, at the age of 39, Babe Ruth accompanied other Major League players on a tour to Japan. His commercial hits started flowing in 1956: tunes like Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. Before Elvis, pop music was fading; but with his skyrocketing success, suddenly rock-and-roll came on the scene and captured the hearts of music fans worldwide. Elvis himself went through many personal difficulties during his career, and he died in 1977, just 42. He put no fewer than 149 singles into the U.S. record charts--a feat that has not been surpassed by any other singer in history. Well, that's all we have time for. We'll see you again, next month.
