CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)
Hello, everyone. To start off, we want to thank you for purchasing the November issue of CNN English Express. Before we get into this month's lesson, we'd like to introduce you briefly to a celebrity who was born in November. We've chosen a woman who is probably the most famous Afro-American female in the world--at least, certainly outside the entertainment industry. We're referring to Condoleezza Rice, the current U.S. Secretary of State. Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14th, 1954, in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of a Presbyterian minister and his schoolteacher wife. Her mother, who taught music, came up with Condoleezza's very unusual name. She created it from the Italian musical expression meaning "with sweetness." We'll tell you a bit about Rice's career later. First, it's time to move on to this month's lesson. So without further delay, let's get started.

OK, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Now it's time to get back to our brief introduction to our celebrity of the month, Condoleezza Rice. Rice has a highly distinguished academic background, capped by a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She joined the faculty at Stanford University, teaching political science, in 1981, and at that institution she went on to hold a number of important posts. In recognition of her brilliance, her achievements and her potential contribution to America's foreign affairs, in 2001 she was tapped to serve as the National Security Advisor to President Bush. She became the Secretary of State in January 2005. Some people say she's destined to become the first female, first Afro-American president. Time will tell. Well, time is what we've run out of. So, we'll see you again next month.

CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)
Hi, everybody. First off, we'd like to thank you for buying this issue of CNN English Express. Like always, we start off with a brief discussion about a celebrity who was born this month. Our celebrity for October is the teenage golf sensation Michelle Wie. In Japan, the media are giving a lot of coverage to promising young female golfers like Ai Miyazato and Sakura Yokomine. But overseas, more than any other teenage golfer, intense interest is focusing on Michelle Wie. Michelle Sung Wie, who is Korean-American, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 11th, 1989--so this year she's turning 17. She began playing golf at the age of just 4, and by the time she was 10, she was already shooting a phenomenal 64 in 18 holes at one of Hawaii's most popular courses. But that is only one of her remarkable feats. We'll talk more about her incredible budding career later. Now, it's time to get into this month's lesson. So here we go.

Well, that's about it for this month's lesson. Before we say our goodbyes, though, let's return to our brief story on the American golfing sensation, Michelle Wie. By the age of 13, Michelle was already competing as an amateur against pros far older and far more experienced. In 2003, she became the youngest person ever--male or female--to win a USGA event for adults. In 2004, she was the youngest female to play in an event on the PGA Tour. In October 2005, a week before her 16th birthday, Michelle announced that she was turning professional. This past May, she finished first in a local qualifying tournament for the Men's U.S. Open. And this is only a sampling of the records she has set during the short course of her ascending career. Clearly, the best is yet to come. Well, that'll have to do it for this time around. We look forward to being with you again next month.

CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)
Hello, everyone. We begin by offering our sincere thanks for purchasing this issue of CNN English Express. For this September issue, as always we'd like to kick off with a short introduction to some celebrity. We've already introduced you to a number of members of the British Royal Family, including the Queen and Prince William, among others. Today, we'd like to tell you something about another royal prince, Prince Harry, the younger brother of Prince William. Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born on September 15th, 1984, so this year he's celebrating his 22nd birthday. The red-haired prince was kept largely out of the limelight until 1997, when the entire world watched in grief and sadness as Prince Harry walked behind the cortege of his mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales, at her funeral in Westminster Abbey. We'll continue our story of Prince Harry in a few minutes, after this month's lesson. First now, we have some work to do.

CDエンディング・ナレーション(track 93)
That brings us to the end of our lesson for this month. Before we part, first let's return to our tale of Prince Harry. In 1998, the prince entered the famed Eton College. In 2002, for his 18th birthday his grandmother, the Queen, gave the prince his own Coat of Arms. One year later, upon graduating from Eton, Prince Harry left Britain and spent the first part of his gap year in Australia. That was followed by a stay in Africa, where he worked in an orphanage in the tiny Kingdom of Lesotho. In May 2005, the prince entered Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to begin training as an officer in the Army. He was commissioned in that capacity this past April, and now he's a member of the Household Cavalry. Like his elder brother, Prince Harry is a prime target of the paparazzi, both for his position as one of the world's most eligible bachelors and for his occasional antics that are quite out of character with conservative royal traditions. Well, that's about all we have time for. See you again next month.

Hi, everybody. As always, we'd like to kick off by thanking you for buying this issue of CNN English Express. This being the August issue, we'll introduce you briefly to a celebrity who was born in the month of August. Among the many stars in the August galaxy, we've selected tennis sensation Roger Federer. Roger Federer was born on August 8th in 1981, so in spite of his global fame, this year he turns but 25. Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland. He began playing tennis at the age of 8, and he turned professional in his late teens, in 1998. His career in tennis since then has been nothing but spectacular. We'll tell you more about that later. But first, though, it's time now to move ahead and begin this month's lesson. So let's get going.

OK, that about brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Now, we'd like to return to our brief introduction to tennis ace Roger Federer. Federer currently ranks No. 1 worldwide. To date he has captured seven grand slam titles, 37 singles tournament titles, and seven doubles tournament titles. In 2004, he had an incredibly successful year, winning 11 singles titles and more than $6 million in prize money. The same year, he also won three grand slam titles in one season, becoming the first player in nearly two decades to achieve that remarkable feat. These days, Federer faces some powerful competition from the 20-year-old sensation from Spain, Rafael Nadal. But at just 25, Federer is still in his prime, so keep an eye out for more great feats from him. OK, that's about all we can squeeze in this time. See you again next month.

Hi, everybody. To start off, we sincerely thank you for purchasing the July issue of CNN English Express. Like every month, we'd like to begin by introducing our celebrity of the month. For July, we have chosen Sylvester Stallone, perhaps better known to the world as "Rocky." Amazingly, it's 30 years since Stallone took Hollywood by storm with his appearance in the first Rocky movie. And even more amazingly, on July 6th Stallone turns 60 years old. Sylvester Stallone was born on July 6th, 1946, in New York City, the son of an Italian immigrant and a chorus girl. He reportedly spent a very unhappy childhood, as his parents bickered endlessly until their divorce when Sylvester was 11. After a checkered teenage period, he eventually decided to study drama at the University of Miami. As for his career, we'll get to that later. First, we'd better move on to this month's lesson. So here we go.

OK, that's about it for this month's lesson. Now, let's get back to our brief story about Sylvester Stallone. In the early 1970s Stallone attempted to make his way as an actor, but with little success. To compensate, besides seeking acting work he began to write scripts, and gradually he attracted some attention that way. Stallone hit the big time when he penned the script to what eventually became Rocky, the 1976 blockbuster movie that made his name, and the character Rocky, legends in their own time. Since that success, Stallone has generally remained one of Hollywood's biggest attractions, as demonstrated by his four sequels to Rocky and three Rambo films, among many others. Today, even as he turns 60, Sylvester Stallone remains one of the brightest luminaries of the silver screen. Alright, that's all we have time for. See you again next time.

Hello, everyone. First up, we want to thank you for buying this issue of CNN English Express. Last month, for our celebrity born in May we focused on one of the hottest men around today, David Beckham. This month, our celebrity of the month is one of the hottest women around today, the beautiful and sexy Angelina Jolie. Angelina Jolie was born on June 4th, 1975, so this year she's turning 31. Her father is Hollywood celeb Jon Voight, but Angelina was raised mostly by her mother after her parents divorced. Early on, Angelina did a fair amount of modeling, but before long she decided to pursue a career in acting. Fame didn't come quickly, though, and it took a number of years before her career really took off. We'll tell you more about that later. First, it's time to get started on this month's lesson. Let's get to it.

Well, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Now, we'd like to return to our brief story about the lovely and talented Angelina Jolie. Angelina started attracting more and more attention in Hollywood in the late 1990s, and she began appearing in a number of very high-profile films. Her career got a major boost in 2000 when she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in Girl, Interrupted. To date, she's also won three Golden Globe Awards. Last year, she starred alongside another Hollywood icon, Brad Pitt, in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Today, Angelina Jolie is rightly known for her acting skills, her knockout looks, and last but not least, her multiple tattoos. Well, that'll have to do it for this month. See you again next time.

Hello, everybody. We'd like to start by thanking you sincerely for purchasing this issue of CNN English Express. Last month, for our celebrity born in April we told you about one of the UK's most famous citizens: Queen Elizabeth. This month, we introduce you to another Brit whose fame probably eclipses that of the Queen herself. We're talking about David Beckham, who was born on May 2nd, 1975. As you surely know, "Becks," as he is often called, is the most famous soccer player in the world today. But in addition to his athletic skills, he is equally famed for his Hollywood looks and his celebrity lifestyle, including his marriage to Victoria, also known as "Posh Spice" from the Spice Girls. Before we continue with our story of David Beckham, though, first it's time to delve into this month's lesson. So here we go.

Well, that's the end of our lesson for this month. Before we say farewell, though, let's return briefly to our story about soccer icon David Beckham. Beckham started winning a reputation for his soccer prowess as a teenager, and by the time he was 20 he began his career as a pro. Soon thereafter, he was voted PFA Young Player of the Year by his peers. He helped his team, Manchester United, to win a succession of league championships in 2000 and 2001, but for a variety of reasons he left England in 2003 and went to Spain to play for the Real Madrid team. Since then, Beckham the athlete has been somewhat less in the spotlight, partly because of his team's disappointing performance, yet his every private move is still avidly watched by paparazzi worldwide. Well, that's about it for this time. We look forward to being with you again next time.

Hello, everyone. As always, we begin by expressing our sincere appreciation to you for buying this issue of CNN English Express. This month, for our celebrity born in April we've chosen someone who's as much a celebrity as anyone on Earth: Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21st, 1926, so this year she celebrates her 80th birthday. Born into the Royal Family, she was educated at home in subjects ranging from art and music to constitutional history and law. She acceded to the throne in 1952 upon the death of her father, King George the Sixth. Her coronation took place on June 2nd, 1953, which means she's been the reigning queen for more than half a century. We'll tell you a bit more about Her Majesty later. Now, it's time to begin this month's lesson.

OK, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Now, we'd like to return to our story about Queen Elizabeth. In 1947―before she became queen, that is―Her Majesty married Philip Mountbatten. Today, her husband is His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. They have four children, with Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, in line to succeed his mother to the throne. Queen Elizabeth's other children are Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. As you may recall, in 2002 Her Majesty celebrated her Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years since her accession. She is extremely active, serving as patron or president of more than 700 organizations. She remains one of the world's longest-reigning and most respected monarchs. Well, that's all we have time for. We'll see you again, next month. Bye for now.

Hello, everyone. To begin, as always, we'd like to thank you for purchasing this issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity born in the month of March, we go a bit back in history to shed some light on the life of one of the English-speaking world's most celebrated poets, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Famed above all for penning the immortal lines, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways," Elizabeth was born in England on March 6, 1806. So this year marks the bicentennial anniversary of her birth. She developed an interest in poetry as a young girl, and by the age of 12, she was already composing her first epic poem. But more about Elizabeth Barrett Browning in a little while. First, it's time for us to get started on this month's lesson.

Well, that's about all we have time for. Before leaving, let's return briefly to our discussion of the poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. As a woman in her thirties, Elizabeth gradually began gathering fame for her poetic writings. Among those who took note of her work was Robert Browning, another poet six years her junior. Their admiration for each other eventually blossomed into romance, ending in their elopement to Italy in 1846. Literary critics generally say that Elizabeth's best work is Sonnets from the Portuguese, one of the most widely known collections of love lyrics in the English language. Elizabeth Barrett Browning died in Florence at the age of 55, but her poetry lives on today. Well, we're about out of time. See you again, next time.

Hello, everyone. First of all, we'd like to thank you for purchasing the February 2006 issue of CNN English Express. Last month, for our celebrity born in January, we talked a bit about Mozart. For our February celebrity, we'd like to offer a brief rundown of the life of another famous musician in an entirely different musical category: George Harrison, one of the Beatles. For most of his life, Harrison believed he was born on February 25th, 1943; but apparently he really came into this world in the final minutes of February 24th. Either way, the Beatle, as he was later known, was born in Liverpool, England. In the mid-1950s, he teamed up with Paul McCartney, a schoolboy friend, playing lead guitar in a local band, the Quarrymen, that eventually became the Beatles. But more about that later. First, it's time to move on to this month's lesson.

Well, that'll about do it for this month's lesson. Before we go, though, let's return to our story about George Harrison. Harrison, together with McCartney and John Lennon, another schoolmate, rose to fame quite quickly in the early 1960s, especially after they formed their famous foursome rounded out by Ringo Starr. Unfortunately, despite the Beatles' success, Harrison is said to have felt lost in the shadows of Lennon and McCartney, who together wrote the lion's share of the Beatles' numerous hits. One exception is the tune "Something," penned by Harrison, which even today enjoys worldwide fame. After the Beatles broke up, Harrison continued to compose and record, but he was rarely in the true limelight. He died of cancer in 2001, at the age of just 58. And that's about all we have time for. We'll see you again, next time.

CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)
Hi, everyone. To start off, we'd like to thank you for purchasing the January 2006 issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity born in the month of January, we have selected someone a bit unusual--not a popular singer, famous actor or sports figure. No, this month we've chosen the man who probably personifies classical music more than anyone else: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was born in Salzburg on January 27, 1756, so this year marks the 250th anniversary of his birth. As a musical prodigy, he began composing at the age of 5, and at age 6 he was already playing before the Empress of Austria. By the end of his teens, he had already written a wealth of music of remarkable variety, including his early symphonies, string quartets, an opera, piano sonatas, masses and violin concertos! We'll continue with our story of Mozart in a little while. First, it's time to get started on this month's lesson.

CDエンディング・ナレーション(track 99)
Well, that's about it for this month's lesson. Before we sign off, though, we'd like to return to our brief story about Mozart. Despite his phenomenal musical capabilities, Mozart's career was not all smooth sailing. He held a number of posts at various courts, but none of them were steady or completely rewarding to him. Even so, he continued to compose in huge quantity wherever he was. In his mid-twenties he began what many people consider to be his crowning achievement: his piano concertos. But he later devoted ever more time to what was probably his greatest musical love: opera. What is probably most remarkable about Mozart is that he composed in such huge quantity, more than 600 works, in such a short time span--for Mozart died in 1791 at the age of only 35. Well, that's all the time we have for now. See you again next time.
