CDオープニング・ナレーション(track 1)
Hello everybody, and thank you for purchasing the December issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity of the month, this month we've chosen one of America's most popular female singers of recent years: Britney Spears. Britney was born on December 2nd, 1981, so this year she's celebrating her 26th birthday. She was born in the Deep South, in Mississippi, and grew up in Louisiana. She took an interest in show business very early on, and by the time she reached her teens, she had already appeared on TV and in a number of off-Broadway productions. In 1997, she briefly joined an all-female pop group, but within the same year she decided to go solo. A demo tape audition got her a contract with a record company, and she soon began touring the States as an opening act for 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. But that's just the prelude. We'll be back with the rest of the story of Britney Spears in a little while. First, it's time for us to start on this month's lesson. So without further ado, here we go.

OK, that's our lesson for this month. Now we'd like to return and relate a bit about our celebrity of December, Britney Spears. Britney made her CD debut in 1998 with a single that became an instant international smash hit, selling a phenomenal 9 million copies worldwide. Her first album, released in 1999, sold an astonishing 25 million copies. Her follow-up album sold 1.3 million units during its first week out, setting a new record for a solo artist. That disc too sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Music awards and nominations poured in. Subsequent albums were commercial successes but not without their detractors. Meanwhile, Britney herself has become increasingly controversial. In 2004 she wed a childhood friend, but the marriage lasted only 55 hours! She went on to marry again, have two children, then divorce. And her eccentric behavior of late has made her a big draw in the tabloids. But our time's up, I'm afraid. See you again next month!

Hello everyone. First off, we'd like to thank you for buying the November issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity this month, we've chosen the phenomenally popular actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio was born on November 11th, 1974, which means that this year he celebrates his 33rd birthday. As you may have wondered, DiCaprio was indeed named after Leonardo da Vinci. Apparently his mother was standing in front of a da Vinci painting in a museum when her as-yet-unborn child kicked for the first time. DiCaprio expressed interest in becoming an actor early on, and he got his first role on the TV version of the film Parenthood. He continued to get minor TV roles, then his real breakthrough came in 1993 for his film role in This Boy's Life. In 1994, he earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of a mentally handicapped boy in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. We'll pick up from there in a little while. First, let's get started with this month's lesson.

Well, that's about it for this month's lesson. Before we leave, let's go back to our brief story on Leonardo DiCaprio. Once DiCaprio garnered acclaim with his Academy Award nomination, he came to the attention of more Hollywood directors and worked in a succession of films. It was in 1997, though, that his star ascended to superstardom when he played the lead in the blockbuster movie Titanic, which is likely the film you know him from. With Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio became a household name worldwide. He was also touted as the newest male sex symbol, and it seemed like everyone was swooning over him. As often happens in such cases, DiCaprio experienced a few lows after that; but in recent years he has come completely back into the limelight for his critically acclaimed acting in The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Departed. And surely there's a lot more ahead. For us, though, time is up, so we'll bid you farewell. See you next time!

Hi everyone, and thank you for buying the October issue of CNN English Express. For our celebrity of October, we've selected one of the richest men on Earth. We're talking about Bill Gates, who was born on October 28th, 1955, so this year he's celebrating his 52nd birthday. Bill had his first encounter with a computer in the eighth grade and began programming computers at age 13. In 1973, he went on to enroll at Harvard. Before long, he began developing his own computer software, and in 1975 he left Harvard to pursue his computer interests. One year later he registered the tradename "Microsoft." More on that later. First, let's get started on this month's lesson.

Alright, that's going to do it for this month's lesson. Now, let's return and finish our story on Bill Gates. As a new startup, Microsoft quickly gathered a following for its BASIC software. From there the company branched out into its own operating system, and in 1990 tremendous success was scored with the release of Windows 3.0, which sold some 10 million copies in the first two years. Before long, most computers worldwide came with Microsoft software pre-installed, and the company became the largest software firm in the world. In 1995, Bill Gates was named by Forbes as the wealthiest person in the world, a position he has generally maintained down to the present day. Together with his wife, Melinda, through their own charitable foundation, Gates now spends a great deal of time--and money--on philanthropy. And that's all we have time for. See you again next month.

Hello, everybody, and thank you for purchasing the September issue of CNN English Express. First up, let's talk a bit about our celebrity for September. We've chosen one of today's most popular female pop/rock singers--Avril Lavigne. Avril was born in Ontario, Canada, on September 27th, 1984. Although she was born to parents of French origin, she herself speaks English. She first attracted attention in 1998 when, as a young teenager, she won a competition to sing on stage with Shania Twain, also of Canada. At the age of 16, Avril was scouted by Arista Records and work began toward the release of her first album. That album, "Let Go," came out in 2002. It hit No. 1 in Canada, Australia and the UK, and No. 2 in the U.S., and to date it has sold a remarkable 20 million copies worldwide. More on Avril later. Now, it's time to get started on this month's lesson.

OK, that's about it for this month's lesson. Now it's time to return to our story on Avril Lavigne. After the phenomenal success she had with her first album, Avril released a new album, "Under My Skin," in 2004. It debuted at No. 1 in the U.S., UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Ireland, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong! That year she also won two World Music Awards. She released her third album, "The Best Damn Thing" this past April. The album debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and the first single from the album, "Girlfriend," became her first No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart. In addition to her successful singing career, Avril has also appeared in several films. She costars with Richard Gere in the movie, The Flock, which opens here in Japan in August. Well, that's about all we have time for. We look forward to being with you again next month.

Hi, everybody. As always, first up we want to thank you for buying the August issue of CNN English Express. Before we take up this month's lesson, we'd like to tell you a bit about our celebrity of the month: Barack Obama. Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4th, 1961, so this year he turns 46. He's said to have a good chance of becoming America's first black president in next year's election. Obama was born in Hawaii, the son of a black Kenyan father and a white American mother. After they divorced, Obama's mother remarried and moved Barack to Indonesia. He spent four years there before returning to Hawaii at the age of 10 to continue his education. Eventually he graduated from Columbia University with a degree in political science and then earned a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1991. We'll pick up his story from here in a little while. First, let's get started on this month's lesson.

CDエンディング・ナレーション(track 83)
OK, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Before we take our leave, let's learn a bit more about Barack Obama. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Obama served as an attorney in Chicago for several years. Then, in 1996, he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, a position to which he was overwhelmingly reelected in 1998 and again in 2002. He ultimately resigned that post in 2004, following his election to the U.S. Senate. 2004 was also the year in which Obama first garnered nationwide notice. That happened when he delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, in which he spoke for national unity. In February of 2007, he formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. Only time will tell whether Barack Obama indeed becomes the first black American president. And with that, it's time to say goodbye. We'll see you again next month.

Hello, everyone. For starters, we want to thank you for purchasing the July issue of CNN English Express. First, we'd like to introduce a celebrity who was born in the month of July. We've chosen someone who is familiar to absolutely everyone: U.S. President Bush. George Walker Bush was born on July 6th, 1946, so this year he turns 61. You might be interested in knowing that President Bush was born on the very same day as Sylvester Stallone. Bush is the son of George Herbert Walker Bush--sometimes informally referred to as "Papa Bush"--who served as U.S. President from 1989 to 1993. George W. Bush graduated from Yale University in 1968 with a B.A. in history. Following a stint in the Texas Air National Guard, he went on to receive an MBA at Harvard. After that, he entered the oil industry back in Texas, where he met and married Laura Welch, who was a schoolteacher and librarian at the time. Now it's time to proceed with this month's lesson. So let's get started!

Alright, that's about it for this month's lesson. Now let's return briefly to our story about President Bush. In 1978 Bush ran for the House of Representatives but lost. He continued to flourish in industry, however, until he and his family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1988 to work on his father's presidential campaign. After his father's presidency ended, the younger Bush returned to Texas where, in 1994, he ran for governor and won. In 1998 he won re-election in a landslide victory--an event that clearly boosted his self-confidence. George W. Bush went on to run for U.S. President in the 2000 election and came out the victor. The rest, as they say, is history. Well, that's about it for this time. We'll see you again next month.

Hi, everybody. As we kick off, we'd like to thank you for purchasing the June issue of CNN English Express. Before we dig into this month's lesson, first let's take a brief look into the life of a celebrity born this month. We've selected one of today's most talented, respected and popular Hollywood actresses: Meryl Streep. Born on June 22nd, 1949, this year she's turning 58. She earned a B.A. in Drama at Vassar College and an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama. In the film The Deer Hunter, only her second outing on the silver screen, Streep was nominated for an Academy Award. She didn't win, but only a year later she did win, this time for Best Supporting Actress in Kramer vs. Kramer. And not long after that, she won her second Academy Award, this time for Best Actress in Sophie's Choice. We'll tell you more about the career of Meryl Streep later. First, it's time to get started on this month's lesson. So, without further ado, let's get to it.

OK, that brings us to the end of this month's lesson. Now, it's time to get back to our brief tale about Meryl Streep. Among her most famous roles are those in such blockbusters as Out of Africa, in which she starred opposite Robert Redford, Ironweed, with Jack Nicholson, and The Bridges of Madison County, with Clint Eastwood. Meryl Streep holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor, with 14 nominations to her name so far. She also holds the record for the actress with the most Golden Globe Awards for films, currently with 6 wins. Most recently, this year she won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in The Devil Wears Prada, and surely more accolades are to follow in the coming years. Well, that about wraps up our story on Meryl Streep, so we'll sign off. Looking forward to seeing you again next month.

Hello, everyone. First up, we want to thank you for buying the May issue of CNN English Express. As always, before we get into this month's lesson, we'd like to introduce our celebrity of the month, and for May we've selected the man who in 2006 was named by People Magazine as the "Sexiest Man Alive," a distinction he also won back in 1997. We're talking about George Clooney, whose many professional hats today include actor, director, producer and screenwriter. George Timothy Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky on May 6th, 1961, so this year he turns 46. Clooney attended university for several years, but then in 1982 he took off for L.A. to try his hand at acting. Within a few years, he became a familiar face on TV, especially in sitcoms, but his big break came when he was chosen for the cast of the huge hit drama ER, which made him a megastar. We'll get back to our story of George Clooney later. Now, it's time to get into this month's lesson. So here we go.

OK, that's about all for this month's lesson. Before we say goodbye, let's return and finish our story on superstar George Clooney. While continuing to star in ER, Clooney simultaneously branched out onto the big screen. Finally, in 1999, Clooney left the cast of ER to pursue his film career full-time, and numerous successes, including Ocean's Eleven, have followed. In 2002, Clooney made his debut as a director. In 2005, he not only directed, produced and starred in Good Night, and Good Luck, but he also starred in Syriana, and became the first person in the history of the Academy Awards to be nominated for directing one movie and acting in another in the same year. Ultimately, he won the Oscar for his acting role in Syriana. Clooney is also widely known for his outspoken political views, most recently for his advocacy of finding a resolution to the Darfur conflict in Sudan. All in all, we can expect to see and hear a lot more of George Clooney in the coming years. Well, that's about all we have time for. See you again next month.

Hello, everyone. For starters, we'd like to thank you for purchasing the March issue of CNN English Express. Like every month, we begin with a brief introduction to our celebrity of the month, and for the month of March we've chosen Bruce Willis, one of the most popular actors not only in the U.S. but all around the world. Walter Bruce Willis―that's his real name―was born on March 19th, 1955, on a U.S. Army base in what was then West Germany, to an American father and German mother. At the age of 2, however, Willis and his family moved back to the U.S., to New Jersey, and it was there that he went to school. During high school, Willis developed an interest in acting, and after a number of detours along the way, he ultimately decided to pursue an acting career. We'll tell you more about that later. First, we'd better head on into this month's lesson. So, away we go.

Well, that's about it for this month's lesson. Now, let's take a few moments and return to our story on Bruce Willis. After a variety of jobs off-Broadway, on TV and in advertising, Willis finally struck it big with his role in the hit TV series Moonlighting. Willis' biggest break came during the airing of that series, however, when he won the leading role in the film Die Hard. The film, released in 1988, was a huge commercial and critical success, and it made Bruce Willis a Hollywood star of global proportions. Of course, Willis has appeared in many films other than Die Hard too, but it's surely for tough-talking police officer John McClane that the name Bruce Willis will go down in Hollywood history. Well, that's all we have time for. See you again next month.

Hello, everybody. As always, we start by thanking you for buying the February issue of CNN English Express. As you probably know, recently headlines have been made in the music industry over the release of a "new" album by the Beatles, titled Love. Previously, we've introduced you individually to members of the Fab Four, but this time we put the spotlight on someone whose name has always been inseparably connected with the Beatles: Yoko Ono. Yoko Ono was born on February 18th, 1933, so this year she turns 74. Her family was well-to-do, and not long after the end of World War II, her family moved to the U.S., and it was there that Ono began exploring her artistic and musical talents. Her life changed forever after she met John Lennon in 1966. More about that later. First, it's time for this month's lesson, so let's get started!

OK, that about winds up our lesson for this month of February. Before we say good-bye, let's go back and continue our story about this month's celebrity, Yoko Ono. She and John Lennon married in March 1969. It was actually Ono's third and Lennon's second marriage. From that time on, Ono and Lennon collaborated both privately, as parents, and professionally. Throughout it all, Ono was widely criticized, and even today there is much debate as to how much of that criticism was valid and how much was an expression of envy towards her position as the wife of a Beatle. After Lennon was killed in December 1980, Ono became the guardian and spokesperson of his legacy, and even today she remains a highly controversial figure. Well, that'll have to do it for this time. We'll be back with lots more next time. See you then!

Hi, everyone. First of all, we'd like to thank you for buying the January issue of CNN English Express. For this first issue of 2007, we're turning the spotlight on a celebrity who was born on January 3rd in 1969--a man who became the world's first billionaire sportsman. We're talking about Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher. He began kart racing at the age of four-and-a-half, and by his teens, Schumacher was winning numerous kart championships on both national and international scale. From there, he proceeded steadily up the racing ladder, until 1991 when he made his Formula One debut at the Belgian Grand Prix. We'll tell you the rest of the story later. First, it's time now to move forward into this month's lesson. So without further delay, let's get to it.

Alright, that's our lesson for this month. Now, before we go, let's return briefly to our story about this month's celebrity, Michael Schumacher. As we mentioned earlier, Schumacher's first Formula One race was the Belgian Grand Prix of 1991. He didn't win that one, but one year later he claimed his maiden victory in that same event, marking the start of a remarkable career in racing. Two years later, in 1994, Schumacher rose to the peak of his profession by winning his first World Championship. From there, he went on to win that prestigious title no less than six more times: in 1995, and then every year between 2000 and 2004. But last September, Schumacher announced his retirement as a driver. Well, that's about all we have time for. We'll be back again next month with lots more. See you then.
